From Melbourne to Bengaluru: Elite Juniors Head to KIOC This December

Most junior cricket pathways in Melbourne follow a familiar route: club cricket, then representative cricket, then sub-district and premier cricket. That route matters, and our coaches have helped hundreds of juniors along it. But Elite Cricket Academy offers something few academies anywhere can: a genuine international pathway.

This December, a team of elite juniors travels to India to train and play matches at the prestigious Karnataka Institute of Cricket (KIOC) in Bengaluru.

What is KIOC?

The Karnataka Institute of Cricket is one of India’s leading cricket institutes, based in Bengaluru. Through the Victorian Elite Cricket League (VECL), Elite has a partnership with KIOC that opens the door for Melbourne juniors to train in one of the world’s most demanding cricket environments.

Why train in India?

Cricket in India is played at a pace and intensity that’s hard to replicate anywhere else. Players face different conditions, different surfaces and different styles of play. For a developing cricketer, that experience is invaluable:

  • Adapting to new conditions builds technique that holds up anywhere.
  • Facing quality spin in the conditions it’s made for is one of the best lessons a young batter can get.
  • Living and training as a squad builds independence, discipline and teamwork.
  • Seeing the game’s global reach gives juniors perspective and ambition.

A pathway, not a one-off trip

What makes this different is that it isn’t a standalone tour. It’s part of a connected pathway:

  1. Junior squads at Hoppers Crossing and Pakenham. Every player starts here, with experienced, qualified premier coaches, a fitness plan, a diet plan and Pathfinder, our online platform for coach notes, skill ratings and session video.
  2. Elite’s own Chennai centre. Elite Cricket Academy runs its own centre in Medavakkam, Chennai, which gives the pathway a permanent base in India.
  3. VECL and KIOC. The VECL partnership with KIOC connects Melbourne juniors with high-performance training in Bengaluru.

Who goes?

The December squad is made up of elite juniors selected through VECL’s try-outs, with each player’s readiness in mind.

If your child is younger or just starting out, that’s exactly where every player in this year’s squad once was. The pathway begins with good coaching, week in, week out.

It all starts in a junior squad

Whether your child dreams of playing in India one day or just wants to get better at the game they love, the first step is the same: a junior squad.

Junior squads run for boys and girls aged 5 to 12 at both our Melbourne centres, and new juniors can try a free first junior group session:

We’ll share updates from Bengaluru in December.
